Preparing a Computer For Recycling (Do-it-yourself-data destruction)

If you’ve decided to let go of that old computer, and you have a charitable purpose in mind, or just to secure your own peace of mind, you can easily destroy the data on your computer, preparing it for re-use.

The easiest way to do this is with a program called Darik’s Boot And Nuke

They have an iso file for you to download.

You will have to turn this iso file into a bootable media (CD/DVD) or USB.

You can do that with your favorite cdrw/dvdrw burning software. If you don’t have any, you can pick it up at ninite.com

In the Utilities section, pick either ImgBurn, or InfraRecorder , download and run the installer.

Run the program, point it at the iso file as your source and your media drive as the targets. Burn your disk.

If you’d prefer to use a USB Thumb Drive, you’ll need a copy of pendrivelinux.com’s YUMI (click here)

Once you have that downloaded, plug in a blank USB drive, run the program and set it up with Darik’s Boot and Nuke.

From there, boot the computer with the media you just created, and follow the menus to run a multipass overwrite on your device’s hard drive.

Or…. we can do it for you. It’s part of what we do.
